Midlands city named among UK’s most sought-after places for home buyers

A Midlands city has been named among the UK’s most sought after places for first time home buyers.

The top 10 list was compiled by Rightmove. The property website analysed the 50 highest-populated cities in the country to see where first-time buyers are looking to the most in 2025.

Coming in at seventh place was Birmingham, where the average house price stands at £191,945.

Birmingham, often argued as the UK’s second city, was the only West Midlands region to feature on the list.

With lots of amenities, a large public transport network and the draw of employment, it’s easy to see why first-time buyers would opt to move to Birmingham.

The city came above Bristol, Nottingham and Southampton.

However it came behind places like Manchester in second, and Edinburgh in third, which have also been touted as being the UK’s second city.

Glasgow came top of the list, where the average house price is £148,979.

A spokesperson for Rightmove said: “We analysed the 50 highest-populated cities in Great Britain to see where first-time buyers are looking to the most in 2025.

“We can reveal that Glasgow has been named Great Britain’s most in-demand city for first-time buyers.

“The average asking price for a typical first-time buyer property (two bedrooms or fewer) in the city is £148,979 – significantly below the national average first-time buyer asking price of £228,551.

“Manchester takes second place with average asking prices just below £211,000, followed by Edinburgh at £251,000.

“Our data shows a trend of first-time buyers looking towards northern cities, with five of the top 10 locations situated in the north of England.

“Leeds takes fourth place with an average asking price of £182,420, while Sheffield and Liverpool round out the top six.

“Birmingham, Bristol, Nottingham and Southampton complete the list, with Bristol having the highest average asking price among the top 10 at just above £283,000.”
